I almost felt as if I were watching a movie set in a foreign county due to the accents, dialect, natural setting, and customs of Arkansas displayed in this film - that atmosphere was one of my favorite things about the film. I agree with many other commentators that that actors playing the 2 young boys (whose character names were Neckbone and Ellis) were fantastic and drew me in more than Reese Witherspoon or Matthew McCounaughey's roles. I also really enjoyed seeing Sam Shephard on screen again - have not seen him in anything for along time! I was a little put off by the Hollywood ending. However, I would definitely watch it again.

Well done, a kind of updated Huck Finn with terrific actors.

Good story and acting. My husband and 18 year old son enjoyed this probably more than I did, and I enjoyed it!

A first-class cast wrestles with a YA script. The two boy actors make the series of increasingly unlikely yet predictable events plausible, even worthwhile. It's nice to see McConaughey and Witherspoon in something decent again. A good film for playing Hey! It's That Guy (Joe Don Baker! Michael Shannon! That lady from 12 Years a Slave!)

what a truly interesting view of Arkansas culture and lifestyle. a great cast with a touch for their roles. we escaped from the rerun Olympics to watch this film. a really good choice. not a surprise ending but fitting for the era and lifestyle.

A good, not great, well-acted coming of age tale. Dark and brooding at times with an edge that doesn't spare its young protagonist. Moves slow, but is a satisfying watch. Ends a little too clean for all its dirt.

Slower than a Hollywood action thriller,.. which it is not. But a well-writted script has drawn great talent to it. And subtle pleasures reward a close (and patient) viewing.

Slowly paced, MUD is about two young boys who meet a man who seems like a vagabond on an overgrown deserted island in the Mississippi River. The majority of the film has very little happening, but the end of the film exhibits some much-needed intensity. McConaughey is decent, as are the two young actors playing Ellis and Neckbone, Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland respectively. However, Sarah Paulson is underutilized (especially considering her powerhouse performance in the miniseries AMERICAN HORROR STORY: ASYLUM) and Reese Witherspoon is a pointless inclusion with very little strength acting here (the role of Juniper would have better been suited for a newcomer than a recognizable face like Reese's). Overall, the film was decent, but, because of how it was crafted, I probably wouldn't want to watch it again.

The boys were great; the "stars" - lousy.

Really enjoyed this movie. Interesting story and great acting. The two boys in the film really impressed me with their realistic portrayals of their characters.
