Item Details

"The books that we choose to keep-let alone read-can say a lot about who we are and how we see ourselves. In THE IDEAL BOOKSHELF, dozens of leading cultural figures share the books that matter to them most-books that define their dreams and ambitions and in many cases helped them find their way in the world. With colorful and endearingly hand-rendered images of book spines by Jane Mount, and first-person commentary from all the contributors, this is a perfect gift for avid readers, writers, and all who have known the influence of a great book"--

What if you could scan the imagined favorite bookshelves of famed writers and other celebrities....? Here is THAT work, complete with commentary on their favorites by these same literati as well as Jane Mount's drawings of what these 'best book displays' would look like. There's quite a wide range of folks chosen to list their faves from Dave Eggers to Chuck Klosterman, Thurston Moore to James Franco and David Sedaris and, naturally, our own Nancy Pearl....!

What a gorgeous book! The cover is exquisite and I loved poring over the illustrator’s depictions of the different titles mentioned. I didn’t really get a lot out of it, however, since I only recognized 9 of those 100+ “leading cultural figures.” I read those nine essays, looked at their shelves, and then moved on.

What I like about this book is that it champions the idea that reading can make us who we are, that without it, we’d be missing a piece of ourselves. I enjoyed looking at the title selections, enjoyed the illustrations and commentary, and most of all enjoyed putting together my own ideal bookshelf.

Nice concept, but not well-executed. There's a list of contributors and their titles in the back, minus the authors, which aren't always complete on the display page. I did get some leads, but more because a title looked interesting than because of anything the contributors said; many books were just present on the 'ideal bookshelf' without any description or annotation. We compulsive readers want to know something more about the books!

As an avid reader, this book was a BIG disappointment. I was looking for undiscovered gems but most of the contributors didn't elaborate on why they selected the books on their shelf. About three-quarters of the books that caught my attention were not held by my local public library. Also the frequency of books common to many contributors suggests either the too similar background of these people (writers, graphic artists and curators) or they are buying from the same publisher's remainder bins. This book desperately needed an index.

This is one of those books so good, you want to get your own copy. Plus you will be inspired to make your own ideal bookshelf. I did! http://blog.idealbookshelf.com/post/39500844703/i-loved-the-process-of-picking-my-top-10
