Summary
Add a SummaryA film about Operation Breakthough, which was an international effort to rescue three gray whales (a family, complete with a little baby whale) trapped in ice near the incredibly northern location of Point Barrow, Alaska, in 1988, highlighting how the press managed to both help and hinder the cause.
Notices
Add a NoticeOther: There is argumentative bickering. Cold temperatures cause metal items to ice to people, as well as causing a layer of ice to form on some people. Wine and other alcoholic beverages are consumed socially.
Frightening or Intense Scenes: Death of an animal is shown. A man uses a chainsaw to cut a hole in ice near a whale.
Sexual Content: Kissing and hugging is shown.
Violence: A harpoon is thrown at a whale; we do not see it make contact.
Coarse Language: A handful of extremely mild obscenities and some name-calling. (This film is a family-friendly film and none of these words are truly profane.)

Comment
Add a CommentI appreciate the fact that the film did not completely romanticize the whales’ rescue. Rather, it showed the differing points of view and interest/agendas at play. Overall, “The Big Miracle” is a nice movie, which I think children especially will enjoy.
wow very good
Great family film with decent message about respecting nature. Nice to see everyone working together to solve a problem, including the Russian icebreaker at the end.
A sweet family movie. I recommend.
Too sweet for this cowgirl.
felt like a news report movie but it is ok
A mostly feel good movie about the relationships developed between whales and humans.
Definite button pusher, although sweet. (The central character is rather *too* sweet.) Not great, but a nice date movie for the environmental crowd.
Good - Big Miracle (2012) 107 min. Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski, and Kristen Bell play true life characters involved in saving a family of whales in the Arctic from drowning. Good family film all around though Barrymore’s continuous rant on the environment becomes a little much by the end of the film.
A fun and sweet family film. A true story and some genuine emotional fighting for a worthy cause. It's sweet and sugarcoated, so it's acceptable for everyone. For hardcore animal lovers, this film will be a dream come true. It's not particularly memorable, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from viewing it if they wanted to see it.
