I absolutely love this book. It's like the type of book that stays with you for days. I couldn't put it down and easily finished the book. It never seemed like a bore, except for the beginning beginning.(Cause that's when characters are introduced and there is no action) I thought that this book was nothing more than an adventure book. The blurb/description does this book no justice. Words can't even describe how FREAKING AWESOME this book is. This book is also a romance book, like the characters are just perfect for eachother. I demanded the second book, which I couldn't even wait a full 24 hours for. Roth is just an amazing author who writes amazing books.5 WORDS. BETTER THAN THE HUNGER GAMES.

i don't say this very often about books, especially about ones who are supposedly like another book (hunger games) but this book was SUPER DUPER AMAZING!!!!!!! it was nothing like hunger games and it was very original, haven't read a book this amazing in a while and its refreshening

Welcome to Chicago in the future. Of course, it is a dystopia, as this is a young adult novel. This seems to have become a standard device in young adult literature. Anyway, the city is now divided into factions: Dauntless, Erudite, Candor, Abnegation, and Amity. At the age of 16, residents choose their faction. For Beatrice “Tris” Prior, the faction decision is a tough one. She doesn’t want to leave her parents and brother in Abnegation, yet she doesn’t feel all that comfortable being so selfless all of the time. She is attracted to the Dauntless faction. When she chooses Dauntless, things get interesting. Over the course of her initiation, she realizes that she has an aptitude for several factions and cannot be boxed into one. She is. . . Divergent! Here’s what I liked: the concept of factions. It is strange, but it works. And I loved Tris’s initiation process. What I didn’t like so much: the cheesy, throwaway references to Chicago. Anyone can use iconic skyscrapers, Navy Pier, and the bean as geographic references. An author who went to Northwestern and lives near the city can do better. I wish she had done better. Also, because it’s written as the first entry in a series, the novel doesn’t really have a conclusion. Frustrating! My final evaluation: entertaining, yet frustrating.

This is my absolute favorite book ever!!! I finished divergent and couldn't wait for insurgent. They were both so amazing. Can't wait for the next one and I hope they don't ruin the book by making the movie terrible.

I actually picked this book up in the first week it came out. So I was not part of the Divergent trend, I can honestly say that I found this book all on my own :P And to be honest? It was the cover that made me pick it up!! But I gave it A shot and it became one of my favorite YA novels, period. I often wonder which faction I would actually choose if I were to have A choice, I'd be Dauntless I'm pretty sure. but of course if it were possible I would be Divergent all the way!!! :) READ THIS BOOK all you YA lovers!! And then go read "Insurgent" the second book. You will get hooked, I promise. ~Tim

Beatrice Prior, who is now sixteen , must choose one of five factions (groups focused on a particular trait - peace, truth, selflessness, bravery, intelligence) to spend her life in. When she takes an aptitude test to help determine what she will choose, she gets three results. Getting more than one result classifies her as divergent, which she is told is a very dangerous secret she must keep to herself. She is classified as Dauntless (bravery), Abnegation (selflessness - the faction where she comes from), and Euredite (intelligence). On Choosing Day, she makes a decision that surprises everyone. She has no clue what she signed up for, and what she will have to do as a divergent.

Divergent is one novel that had me jumping out of my seat, biting my nails to the quick as I was drawn into Beatrice's world, cheering her on one minute, and wanting to cry with her the next. Before Choosing Day, where each sixteen year old will decide which faction they wish to devote their life to, is a simulated aptitude test that will tell Beatrice which faction she would fit in most with...but for her life will never be simple. Instead of having just one of these traits as is normal, Beatrice possesses at least three, which makes her a dangerous person for reasons she doesn't understand, and answers are not forthcoming as she has to keep this information to herself or risk being killed. She chooses a different faction then the one she was raised in. She does have her moments where she seems a little cold like when she wishes one boy would stop sniveling, and you see why Abnegation didn't suit her. But then the next minute she is putting herself in danger for someone else, and you understand why she has a bit of a split personality. She's been born into a society that believes you can only have one quality, and she has to figure out on her own that being brave doesn’t mean that she has to give up being selfless as well. As she fights to stay in the competition, for only ten initiates will be able to call their new faction family, I couldn't help but root for her. Beatrice has a lot to learn, but it's through obstacles and the friendship's she makes that she ultimately finds herself.
