In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue -- Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is -- she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are -- and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves, or it might destroy her. Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series -- dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance. - Jacket flap. In a future Chicago, sixteen-year-old Beatrice Prior must choose among five predetermined factions to define her identity for the rest of her life, a decision made more difficult when she discovers that she is an anomaly who does not fit into any one group, and that the society she lives in is not perfect after all.

Amazing book!
The beginning is very interesting on how it explains all the five factions and then there's "Divergent". emotions and reactions are so well explained. Read the book if you like action.

I seen the movie first and still found this an excellent read. I have read some people did not like the movie that read the book first however I did not find that. The book details more disturbing scenes where the movie keeps them out probably for a lower rating with teens watching. A few parts differ but I think those changes helped to make the movie considering they had to condense the details from the book to a 2 hr and 17 minute movie as it was. Can't wait to read & see the next.

I admit I was holding off on this book because my friend made it out to be some love story all about love and romance, and gee do I hate that kind of book. But I was finally convinced to read it and... I LOVED IT!!!!! I literally read it in one day I could not put it down! There is some romance in the book but it's not over powering to the main plot. I think this book has opened me up to more books that do have some romance in them, but mostly this book was amazing!!!! If you too are holding off because of "love" just read it you'll love it I promise it is up there with Harry potter, yes that good! Thx 4 reading about all my dumb opinions :)

It was a good book, but only good. Definitely not great. I was not sucked in at all but it wasn't a bore to read. It just didn't make me care and so much happens so quickly after dragging. And at the end I felt Roth was killing off characters solely so she wouldn't have to write about them anymore. Plenty of good guys died but no badies even when ample opportunity was given.

Tris shooting people was hilarious though.

One of my favorite books, Tris reminds me of myself sometimes and I think Veronica Roth did a great job.

No words can describe divergent like the actual book so go read it now!

Summaries below are accurate- The book is a dystopian, and therefore overhyped, just like Hunger Games. This book is horrible.

In this dystopian society, in the future Chicago, those that reach the age of 16 are forced to pick their life. They must decide where they belong: Abnegation, Erudite, Candor, Dauntless or Amity. Each faction has a goal. For example, the Abnegation believe that people are too selfish, therefore they show selflessness. Once they turn 16, they take a test to help them decide which faction is best for them. This story follows the life of a teenage girl, Beatrice Prior. When she takes the test, she learn that she is part of a rare group, she is Divergent. This means that she didn't fit into a specific group.
Through this story, it shows Tris' problems, decisions and her survival. Can she survive? Can she keep her divergence a secret? Will those that are hunting her find her?

Beatrice Prior and all other sixteen year olds in the future Chicago must make the most significant decision of their lives. They will decide to be Abnegation, Erudite, Candor, Dauntless, or Amity. To help them with this decision, an aptitude test creates a simulation to find what faction the teenagers belong in. This test shows that Beatrice does not just show traits of one faction, but instead shows three. This makes her Divergent.
This novel shows Tris's struggle to survive in a world that wants to kill her and every other Divergent. Divergents are hunted down and killed by the will of a certain one faction that has a plan to control the others. The only flaw in their control are the Divergents, who "cannot be controlled". Tris must save not only herself, but friends and family from their impeding deaths.

It was a good book. Kept me wanting to read more. Can't wait for the rest of the movies to come out.

This is the first book in the "Divergent" series. Beatrice Prior lives in a dystopian future Chicago where society is divided into 5 different factions based on the results of an aptitude test. This test is taken by every member of the city at age 16. The next day at the Choosing Ceremony, they can pick any faction to spend the rest of their life with, regardless of the test results. Beatrice Prior gets 3 results, which makes her Divergent. Abnegation, which she was born into because both her parents were Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless. She picks Dauntless at the ceremony. Read the book to find out what happens next ;)

Violence: Slight violence may be overwhelming for younger crowds

Frightening or Intense Scenes: Peter stabbing Eward's eye, Simulations, Tris getting hurt over and over again, Tris almost get killed by the people she loves the most. But is also sad because Four doesn't know Tris in the end and tries to hurt her, she witnesses her moms death, and she has to kill one of her best friends.

Violence: Yes, of course Divergent would have violence. It's like The Hunger Games that way. For example, getting stab in the eye with a butterknife, fighting each other as a test, and being under simulation and killing off all the people of one faction. That's alot already.
