Item Details

Doctor Impossible--evil genius, diabolical scientist, wannabe world dominator--languishes in a federal detention facility. He's lost his freedom, his girlfriend, and his hidden island fortress. Over the years he's tried to take over the world in every way imaginable: doomsday devices of all varieties (nuclear, thermonuclear, nanotechnological) and mass mind control. He's traveled backwards in time to change history, forward in time to escape it. He's commanded robot armies, insect armies, and dinosaur armies. Fungus army. Army of fish. Of rodents. Alien invasions. All failures. But not this time. This time it's going to be different... Fatale is a rookie superhero on her first day with the Champions, the world's most famous superteam. She's a patchwork woman of skin and chrome, a gleaming technological marvel built to be the next generation of warfare. Filling the void left by a slain former member, we watch as Fatale joins a team struggling with a damaged past, having to come together in the face of unthinkable evil. Soon I Will Be Invincible is a thrilling first novel; a fantastical adventure that gives new meaning to the notions of power, glory, responsibility, and (of course) good and evil. From the Hardcover edition.

bham2013 This fantastic tale is told in alternating chapters from the perspective of Dr. Impossible, evil super-genius, and Fatale, aspiring superhero. Filled with complex characters and hilarious situations, this is the literary equivalent of the avengers movie - ridiculously over the top but too fun to put down. I'm not a comic book reader but I thoroughly enjoyed the intelligent writing and gleeful energy of this dissertation-procrastination.

I loved the premise of this story and especially loved the chapters from the point of view of the supervillian, Doctor Impossible. It lost itself in some of it's own details, especially when talking about the different superheroes/villians in the history of this world, but there is a glossary to help you out. There were a couple of things that were started but then sort of fizzled out, which is why I only gave this one a three out of five stars. But, in the end, I enjoyed it and would recommend it.

Alternating first-person narrative of the world's smartest super-criminal and one of it's latest super-heroes, which leads up to their cataclysmic battle. Slightly ironic throughout, this is ultimately a straight adventure tale which not only covers the criminal's latest plot to take over the world but also 70 years of history of earth's mightiest heroes. Recommended even to those who don't like comics and want a light read.

A comic book without the pictures, superheroes and evil villains and all. Austin Grossman has hit on the love of all things superhero for a generation that isn't "supposed" to read comics anymore - and so he's developed an emotional and complex story following superheroes through their regular shenanigans, but also giving us a glimpse behind the masks. Laugh out loud funny, I hope Mr. Grossman brings us more like this in the future.

Tremendous fun; very funny and emotionally deep. For a first book, this is a winner, and I eagerly await further works.
