In Stephanie's opinion, toxic waste, rabid drivers, armed schizophrenics, and August heat, humidity, and hydrocarbons are all part of the great adventure of living in Jersey. She's a product of the "burg," a blue-collar pocket of Trenton where houses are attached and narrow, cars are American, windows are clean, and (God forbid you should be late) dinner is served at six. Now Stephanie's all grown up and out on her own, living five miles from Mom and Dad's, doing her best to sever the world's longest umbilical cord. Her mother is a meddler, and her grandmother is a few cans short of a case. One for the Money is now a major motion picture starring Katherine Heigl as Stephanie Plum and Debbie Reynolds as Grandma Mazur. From one of the most original voices in film and performance art--screenwriter and director Miranda July's "wry, wistful, vulnerable, tough, and tender" ( Publishers Weekly ) collection.

Summary
Add a SummaryA recently-laid off woman is down to her last few dollars. She's hocked everything she has and is forced to work for her bail bondsman uncle as a bounty hunter just to buy groceries. The story follows her exploits at learning the business while tracking a most uncanny bond-skipper. In the interim, she meets up with some really inscrutable characters.
This series is about about a woman bounty hunter, her co-workers, foes, friends, and family. Often you can relate to her misadventures, other times they are so out there you know they can't really be true, but you laugh anyway.

Add a CommentIf you want to laugh out loud, read this book. If you are looking for "good" literature, go elsewhere. The movie doesn't do justice to the books.
I really don't see what the fuss is about. Sure Stephanie Plum's got a smart mouth, but Evanovich's screwball romances are way more fun. I found this story downright creepy - not just the bad guys, who are as bad as they could possibly be, but the heroine and "hero" are both seriously screwed up. You want funny mysteries, try Donna Andrews. Light-hearted and fun - way more to my taste.
Love the fun and lightheartedness of this book and Stephanie Plum. One of my husband's co-workers had given me Explosive Eighteen (which was my first read in the series) and I was not impressed at all. However, I decided to start from the beginning of the series and was not disappointed!
One of the most interesting books I have read.
the first in one of my all-time fav series. have read them all at least twice but it all started here
I put off reading the first Plum because I didn't think I would like it. Turned out to be funny and I end up liking it. Now onto seeing the movie...
A fun quick read. I saw the movie first, but that didn't spoil the fun of this book.
The Stephanie Plum series is one of my favorites! I loved all of the books and am ready for the next one!
A long-established writer, I discovered her recently. I could not put this book down. A great summer read.
I read this book upon a recommendation of a friend. I guess I've had my head in the sand because I didn't realize it was the story upon which the recent Katherine Heigl movie was based until I saw the cover of the book. Well-written suspense; realistic description of the activity and the people of everyday life, presenting all with a dry wit which made the reading lighter. I know the series has a following and I can appreciate why; however, the writing style was a little too coarse for my taste.
