Add a CommentStrangely, this book didn't seem dated to me. The concept of "excellent" women is still alive today, including several of them in my own family.
If you've never read Barbara Pym before, this is the one to start with! The Jane Austen of 1950's Britain.
This is my favourite of all Pym's works. Wonderful, gentle humour about English gentlewomen of a bygone age. Pym is often compared to Jane Austen, and in this instance, I think the comparison is well-deserved. You feel that Pym genuinely cared for her subjects. Thoroughly charming.
